BuckFast Queen Genetics and Lineage
The Buckfast bee was developed in England by a beekeeper named Brother Adam who spent his time at Buckfast abbey breeding and selecting for traits from genetics that he brought in from around the world that would be ideal for beekeepers to manage. Trait's like high Honey production and brood production, gentleness, conservative of their food stores, disease resistance, low tendency to swarm. Today there are only a few countries that still maintain this genetic line of bees. Denmark, Germany, Canada and a few others. Our queen genetics originate from Canada,Denmark. Canada sources their genetics from Denmark then we source our genetics from Canada. In 2019 APHIS closed the border "Exportation" of bees from Canada to the US. Before the border was closed honey bee germ plasm was cryopreserved to be used for the Instrumental Insemination of our breeder queens. From there we have been starting to select for mite resistance from our open mated queens used in our production colonies to cross breed with our next generation of F1 stock from our ii breeders.
